The College was co-founded by Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Hunan University. The discipline of journalism was founded in 1995. The college has 5 undergraduate majors which include Journalism, Advertising, Broadcasting and Hosting Arts, Television Production and Performing. The major of journalism is a national-level speciality with three specific directions: the Internet, New Media, as well as International Communication. The major of Television Production is a provincial-level speciality. The college offers doctoral program of second-grade discipline in Cultural Communications and master program of first-grade discipline in Journalism and Communication as well as professional master program of Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC).

The college owns a national-level off-campus practice base for university students, a national-level cultural quality education base for university students, a national-level high quality video class, a provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centre and a provincial-level talents cultivation base for journalism and publishing industries. The college also owns a provincial-level key research base of social science (the Hunan Cultural Industries Research Base), 6 university-level research centres and 2 research institutions cooperated with enterprises.

According to the 4th evaluation of the Ministry of Education, the college ranks 17 in the discipline of journalism and communication among domestic universities. The college now has over 1200 students, including nearly 800 undergraduates and over 400 graduates. The college has 60 faculty members, including 13 professors and 26 associate professors. 27 of them hold Ph. D degree while 13 of them are Ph. D candidates. The college also has 55 adjunct professors and adjunct tutors of postgraduate studies from professional field.

Among them, there are 2 chief experts of major projects of National Social Science Foundation of China, 1 chief expert of key projects of National Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education, 3 faculty members enrolled in the Ministry of Education Program for New Century Excellent Talents, 2 leading talents of national news and publishing industries.

1 faculty member is in the committee of Teaching Guidance Committee of Journalism Discipline of the Ministry of Education and 2 in the committee of Teaching Guidance Committee of Film and Broadcasting Discipline of the Ministry of Education. 1 faculty member is in the expert committee of National Excellent Talents Cultivation of Journalism.

The Centre for Economics, Finance and Management Studies (CEFMS) at Hunan University was established in 2013 as a “special international platform” to attract talents from around the world to conduct frontier research, and to provide students with rigorous graduate training. The CEFMS consists of three institutes: Economics Institute, Finance Institute and Management Science Institute.

The faculty of the CEFMS consists of special-term faculty and full-time faculty. All special-term professors are senior faculty members in major universities in the US. Currently, the CEFMS has a team of 9 special-term faculty members, 11 full-time faculty members and over 60 doctoral and master students.

After 40 years of development and construction, the College of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering in Hunan University has become a centre of research and education with nation-wide influence. The college hosts 6 academic departments: Computer Science and technology, Computer Engineering, Communication Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Engineering, and Cyberspace Security. The college also functions as the National Demonstrative College of Software Engineering and the College for State Secrets.

The college operates the National Super Computing Centre in Changsha and works as a member institute of national “2011 plan” platform for super-computing and national “111” platform for talents and innovations.

The college currently has over 150 full-time faculty members. Their researches cover a wide range of areas related to computer science and electronic engineering. The college has four provincial key laboratories focusing on “Embedded Network Computing”, “Trusted Systems and Networks”, “Big Data Research and Applications” and "Advanced Communication Technology ". The college also has the provincial "Data Analysis" Engineering Centre and MoE "Advanced Communication Technology" Key Laboratory in Hunan province.

Founded in 1921，the College of Electrical and Information Engineering of Hunan University is one of the most prestigious electrical and information engineering colleges in China. It comprises 4 departments: Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Control Science and Engineering, Department of Electronic Science and Technology, Department of Instrument Science and Technology, and includes two National Key Disciplines：Control Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Currently, the college has a total of 180 faculty and staff members, among which there are 40 professors, 57 associate professors, 42 assistant professors, and nearly 3000 graduate students and undergraduate students.

With three national research bases, which are National Engineering Research Centre for Power Quality Conversion and Control, National Engineering Laboratory for Robot Vision Perception and Control Technology, National Defence Key Discipline Laboratory for Electric Drive and Servo Technology, the college is dedicated to providing high-quality education and research.

Founded in 1982, the college is among the best schools of environmental study in China. We have the national key discipline of Environmental Engineering, the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering doctoral degree awarding powers and post-doctoral research station, key laboratory of Environmental Biology and Control appointed by China’s Ministry of Education, national experimental teaching demonstration centre in Environmental Science and Engineering and national teaching team of Environmental Science and Engineering.

Our excellent faculty comprises over 20 prize winning scholars, including winners of the China’s national Leading Talents Program, the Yangtze River Scholar Program, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the national program for supporting the top young professionals in China, among many others.

At present, this discipline has developed nine main research directions, including Environmental System Engineering, Water Pollution Control Engineering, etc., which all have acquired fruitful results.

The history of the College can be traced back as early as 1896, when the Yuelu Academy was founded. The College comprises the departments of Chinese Language Teaching, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Chinese Language and Literature, and Literature and Writing.

The college has 36 staff in total; our 28 teaching faculty members include 7 professors and 13 deputy Professors, focused on cultivating talents from undergraduate to PhD level.

The history of economics disciplines in Hunan University can be traced back to the Faculty of Business established in 1926. The School of Economics and Trade was created by merging the economics and trade disciplines of former Hunan University and Hunan Institute of Finance and Economics. It has soon developed into a leading academic institution by carrying on the educational traditions of the “Ancient Millennium Academy”, relying on Hunan University’s advantages, and highlighting interdisciplinary infiltration of arts, science and engineering disciplines.

The school now confers master and doctoral degrees in two first-level disciplines: Theoretical Economics and Applied Economics. We offer master programs in Taxation and International Business. Disciplines offering bachelor degrees include International Trade, Economics, and Finance and Taxation, among which International Trade is designated as the National Key Discipline. The school currently has an enrolment of over 2,000 students, including 1,200 undergraduates, 500 master students, 150 doctoral students and around 150 international graduate students.

The school has 90 staff and 75 faculty members. Most of them are famous professors on economics disciplines. The school will follow its legacy of solidarity and enterprise, as well as its rigorous attitude in research, and engage in promoting professional education, elevating disciplinary platforms, increasing scientific research strength and enhancing international openness. School of Physics and Electronics (SPE) is one of the oldest schools at Hunan University. It has two undergraduate majors: Physics, and Electronic Science and Technology, and three departments: Department of Applied Physics, Department of Electronic Science and Technology, and Experimental/Innovation Teaching Centre.

We have two first level disciplines of Physics and Electronics, and our Physics discipline ranks top 1% in the ESI global ranking. Physics and Electronic Science and Technology are the key subjects in Hunan province. SPE has a complete talents-cultivation system ranging from bachelor to postdocs. SPE is authorized to award PhD students with degrees of Physics or Electronic Science and Technology, and to award master students with degrees of Physics, Electronic Science and Technology or Education.

We now have 112 workers in SPE, including 88 faculty members and 34 staff. More than 75% of the faculty own a PhD degree and over 55% of them have abroad experience. We have 2 winners of “National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars”, 1 winner of “National Natural Science Foundation of China Youth Fund”, 1 winner of “Thousands Young Talented Program”, 2 winners of “Hunan Hundreds Young Talented Program”, 1 winner of “Foreign Hundreds Talented Program”, 1 winner of “Hunan Furong Distinguished Professor”, 8 winners of “Education Ministry's New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan”, 4 winners of “Hunan Outstanding Young Scholars” and 3 winners of “Hunan Science Fund for Innovative Research”.

We have a Key Laboratory for Micro-Nano Optoelectronic Devices of Ministry of Education, a Physics Teaching Laboratory in Hunan Province and a base for science education in Hunan province.

The College of Civil Engineering at Hunan University was founded in 1903, which has a history of over 100 years and is one of the most prestigious civil engineering programs in China.

The college covers almost all the major disciplines in Civil and Environmental Engineering, including Structural Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Municipal Engineering (water and wastewater engineering), Building Environment and Equipment Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Building and Administration, Disaster Prevention & Safety, Roadway and Transportations, Engineering Mechanics, and Construction & Building Materials. The college has a world-class research team with a total of over 198 faculty members and supporting staff members, including six members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nine national “1000 Talent Plan” professors, and a large number of distinguished professors.

The college has state-of-the-art research laboratories and facilities, distributed in five central and provincial governments sponsored key laboratories. Currently, the total enrolment of the college is about 3200, including 2200 undergraduate students and 1000 graduate students (Ph.D. and Master Candidates).

Traced back to 1897, the School of Foreign Languages of Hunan University comprises of two teaching departments in English and Japanese languages. It has 134 full-time faculty members, including 24 professors and 49 associate professors.

Now, the School has a complete cultivation scheme of four tiers, including one post-PhD exchange station and one PhD program in Foreign Languages and Literature, one Master of Science program and two programs for specialized masters, and two programs for undergraduates.

The School houses 12 research institutes, including one provincial research centre of social science studies. In recent years, it has published over 50 academic works and over 300 CSSCI papers based on 27 nation-funded, 12 Ministry-funded and over 130 provincial funded research projects.

Up till now, the School has been awarded 1 national and 7 provincial prizes for teaching and research achievements. In 2017, the School achieved B+ in the 4th Evaluation of Foreign Languages Programs by the Ministry of Education and placed 12th nationwide in the top soft science discipline rankings.

The College offers PhD programs in pure mathematics and applied mathematics. It is equipped with one of the main laboratories in Hunan Province; while our mathematics program is a provincial key discipline. We have 85 full-time faculty members, including 15 professors.

The main research fields in pure mathematics include Partial Differential Equations and Geometric Analysis, Functional Differential Equations, Dynamic Systems, Complex Analysis and Hyperbolic Geometry, Harmonic Analysis, Algebra, Combinatorics and General Topology.

The main research fields in applied mathematics include Numerical PDEs, Optimization Methods, Numerical Algebra, Inverse Problems, Statistical Analysis and Optimal Prediction.

Established in 1977, the School is one of the earliest design schools in China. It first offered a master’s degree in Design in 1993, and a doctoral degree in 2005. The following year, the School featured in the World Top 60 Design Schools by Business Week (U.S.) magazine.

Today, we offer BA degrees in industrial design, product design and visual communication; MA in design, MFA in design and ME in design; plus PhD in design. We chair the Industrial Design Education Instructional Committee under the Ministry of Education of China.

We’re also members of Cumulus and of three important national design education organizations, as well as being co-founder of the China-Italy Design & Innovation Centre. We have an international joint design school in Shenzhen with RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) which is the first one of this kind in China.

The Educational Science Research Institute of Hunan University prepares students and professionals of diverse backgrounds for positions of leadership in research, policy, and practice in education. The degree programs the Institute provides include a doctorate degree program of “educational management”, two academic master’s degree programs which are “Education” and “Educational economy and management”, and a professional program of “Education”.

Faculties of the Institute explore research fields such as basic educational theory, effective teaching, administration of higher education, and evaluation of higher education quality.

The College has a long history of education in finance and statistics and has established very good reputation in industry. It offers doctoral, master's and bachelor’s degrees in both applied economics and statistics, as well as programmes for specialist masters.

The College takes in 360 full-time undergraduates, 400 postgraduates and approximately 20 doctoral candidates each year and links with overseas universities in education and research, including University of Miami(USA), University of Nottingham(UK), and Tohoku University(Japan).

The College comprises five teaching departments in monetary finance, applied finance, financial engineering, risk management and insurance, and statistics. The college currently has 87 full-time faculty members, including 22 Professors and 37 Associate Professors.

The College, with a rich history traced back to 1908 at Hunan Polytechnic Institute, is among the top ten schools of Mechanical Engineering in China. It is also one of two “world-class disciplines” at Hunan University. Degree programs including B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. can be offered through three primary disciplines covering Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, and Engineering Thermophysics.

Founded in 2000, the College of Materials Science and Engineering provides almost all the the majority disciplines in Material Science and Engineering, including Metallurgy, Carbon and Ceramic Materials Engineering, Polymer Science, and Materials Physics and Chemistry.

Now the College has 79 faculty and staff. The history of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering can be traced back to 1908, the foundation of analytical chemistry courses. On the basis of the previous work accumulated by several generations of HNU chemists, the Chemistry discipline of HNU now deserves its world-wide reputation, as it is ranked by Nature Index system as No. 33 internationally and No.9 domestically, and enters the 1% of ESI.

The discipline of “Analytical Chemistry” is evaluated as the “State Key” discipline. Furthermore, the college holds a series of research centres, such as the State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Bio-Sensing and Chemometrics, the Engineering Centre for Advanced Catalysis of the Ministry of Education, and the Provincial Key Laboratory for Bio-Nanotechnology and Molecular Engineering. The Yuelu Academy is one of the four most prestigious academies in ancient China. It was founded in 976 AD and is renowned as ‘Millenarian Academy’. Currently, the Academy consists departments of the history, philosophy and archaeology.

Its faculty members are mostly renowned and innovative scholars inside and outside the country, including 19 full professors, 9 associate professors and 25 assistant professors.

We are proudly taking on the leading role in research in intellectual history of China (Song-Ming dynasties), history of Chinese academies, history of Huxiang culture, and history of Chinese rituals. Now, the Academy offers BA, MA, and PhD programs, and postdoctoral research is also available.

Founded in 1929, the College of Architecture was ranked 9th nationwide in 2012. We cover the majority of disciplines of architecture, from urban and rural planning to environmental art and landscape architecture. We offer Master, Bachelor and Doctoral programs.

We have promoted international academic exchanges, and the College has build sisterhood links to Kagoshima University (Japan) since 1992, École d'architecture de Nancy (France) since 2006, University of Rome (Italy) since 2008, KIT (German) since 2011 and Louisiana State University (USA) since 2013, and Ming Chuan University (Taiwan) since 2014.

Established in March 2003, the College is among the first Marxism colleges founded during the new era of China. We provide ideological and political courses, ranging from undergraduate level to Ph.D.

We offer the following first order courses: Ph.D in Marxist theory, Basic Principles of Marxism, Development History of Marxism, Marxism in China and Ideological Education.

We also offer master degrees in following research fields: philosophy and Marxist theory, basic principles of Marxism, Marxism in China, ideological education, basic problems of modern Chinese history, philosophy of science and technology, and Marxist philosophy. Marxist theory became the primary first-order discipline in Hunan province in 2011; and in July 2012 its postdoctoral centre was established.

Our College was ranked in the top 15 in the third round of the China Discipline Ranking (CDR) assessment released by the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Centre (CDGDC).

The College has established an International Science and Technology Co-operation Base of Biomedicine and Life Analytical Chemistry, which was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The College has a total of 45 full-time faculty members.

With nearly 4,000 sq.m. of research and teaching space, plus state-of-the-art instruments and devices worthing 30 million RMB, we have attracted more than 60 million RMB research funding in recent years, including a number of important scientific research projects, such as the National Programme of Key Basic Research Project (973 Programme) and the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China. The disciplines of biology and biochemistry entered the top 1% of the ESI Global list in 2011.

The School covers the established and emerging fields of law, public administration and politics. It is well known internationally for high quality research ability, as well as for its legal, administrative and political education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The teaching and research fields in the School include civil law, criminal law, economic law, jurisprudence, administrative management, community management, city management, NGOs and politics. There are currently 119 full-time academic faculty members, including 68 professors and 34 associate professors.
