The College was co-founded by Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Hunan University. The discipline of journalism was founded in 1995. The college has 5 undergraduate majors which include Journalism, Advertising, Broadcasting and Hosting Arts, Television Production and Performing. The major of journalism is a national-level speciality with three specific directions: the Internet, New Media, as well as International Communication. The major of Television Production is a provincial-level speciality. The college offers doctoral program of second-grade discipline in Cultural Communications and master program of first-grade discipline in Journalism and Communication as well as professional master program of Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC).
The college owns a national-level off-campus practice base for university students, a national-level cultural quality education base for university students, a national-level high quality video class, a provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centre and a provincial-level talents cultivation base for journalism and publishing industries. The college also owns a provincial-level key research base of social science (the Hunan Cultural Industries Research Base), 6 university-level research centres and 2 research institutions cooperated with enterprises.
According to the 4th evaluation of the Ministry of Education, the college ranks 17 in the discipline of journalism and communication among domestic universities.
The college now has over 1200 students, including nearly 800 undergraduates and over 400 graduates. The college has 60 faculty members, including 13 professors and 26 associate professors. 27 of them hold Ph. D degree while 13 of them are Ph. D candidates. The college also has 55 adjunct professors and adjunct tutors of postgraduate studies from professional field.
Among them, there are 2 chief experts of major projects of National Social Science Foundation of China, 1 chief expert of key projects of National Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education, 3 faculty members enrolled in the Ministry of Education Program for New Century Excellent Talents, 2 leading talents of national news and publishing industries.
1 faculty member is in the committee of Teaching Guidance Committee of Journalism Discipline of the Ministry of Education and 2 in the committee of Teaching Guidance Committee of Film and Broadcasting Discipline of the Ministry of Education. 1 faculty member is in the expert committee of National Excellent Talents Cultivation of Journalism.
